Hybrid games are the future, but it is to be expected that they haven't appeared out of nowhere! Before the arrival of mobile devices that will make Hybrid Games popular, there was (and is) a whole family of games called the Electronic Games.
The electronic games are very easy to recognize because they added this fancy mechanics to the game like sounds, which were otherwise not possible in boardgames and in exchange they just needed a couple of batteries. You most likely encountered them in your life, especially if you are a fan of this sort of entertainment, because some of this truly ancient contraptions are still very much in use and going strong... After all who did not hear about Operation, an electronic game "of skill" from the year 1965? How about electronic Battleships, a variant of another ancient game, originating from before World War II? It's not a new thing, electronic games, and frankly, no matter their origins and aims, lots of them tend to turn quite... Hilarious.
This whole array of electronic board game mechanics deserves a post alone. However, all those electronic games left an important legacy that we cannot overlook... Their advertisements! :D
